Lakes Rally

Those members with long memories will remember the many years that the RSR Lakes Rally was held at the Ullswater hotel and, for one year, the Glenridding hotel, both at Glenridding by Ullswater. The Ullswater Hotel is now known as the Inn by the Lake and has thankfully escaped the worst of the flooding caused by the river going through the middle of the village bursting it's banks and have provided shelter for villagers. However the Glenridding Hotel and most of the middle of the village has been devastated. The road north of the village has been torn apart and further north at the top end of Ullswater the bridge into Pooley Bridge has been swept away, taking with it the power and communications cables. The whole of Cumbria has been very badly affected but I feel particularly sorry for the people of Glenridding, they made heroic efforts over the past few days to try to clear the debris from the river channel and their properties only to have it all happen again last night. I am a member of Coniston Mountain Rescue team and, thankfully, we were lucky in that there were only minor problems in our area although we did send team members to Carlisle to assist, however the team in Patterdale, the next village along from Glenridding, attended over 50 incidents last weekend, despite their own base being flooded. They were out again all last night. This is not a begging letter but spare a thought for these folk and maybe book a holiday or even a weekend break in Ullswater next time you are thinking of a holiday in the UK, we rely on heavily tourism and the recovery will be very difficult if people stop coming.
