RF91 vs RF95 Reguator/fuse box

Post by David2021 » Tue Aug 02, 2022 2:43 pm

The RF91 regulator (37002) is shown in the wiring diagrams in the workshop manual. This is shown in the Lucas parts bible as being replaced by RF 95/2 part 37182. This is also referred to in the WSM page on regulators. My question is how do the connections match up? If you compare the connections with the Rover 60 (which shows an RF95) there are many differences. The 60 does show the SU fuel pump though & I believe that was a standard fitment to Export chassis' 12' tourers, but is ignored on the wiring diagram!
Do I use the RF95 as if it was an RF91 and just use the same terminals?

There are 18 wires drawnj asgoing into the RF91 and only 14 into the RF95!...I don't think this is why I seem to have "spare" wires under my dash, but...!

I have basically used the placings for the RF91 on the RF95...that seems to be mostly how it was wired! I have sorted the wires for the Ign warning light and that seems to be all working as it should. Now to have a go at the choke warning light, put in place the wiring for the Reserve fuel switch and redo the switch for the "Pass Light" (or fog light as the wiring diagram says!). I did not realise how useful the "audible" feature on the continuity setting of my test meter was when trying to establish which wires went where!

Hi David
I have used the RF91, RF95 and CB17 regulators I had interchangeably on my P2 without noticing a difference. They all have the same 9 terminals but 'not necessarily in the same order' as Eric Morcambe (almost) used to say.
As I sometimes find it difficult to read the raised labels on the cover I highlighted them. I just masked off the relevant area painted it with correction/marker fluid and gently sanded off the tops of the lettering to make it stand out.

As all 3 regulators are now faulty I have succumbed to a new electronic regulator for about the same price as a traditional one and just hope it lives up the the claims for better reliability and better accuracy
