As Ive mentioned I have been helping a friend with his 1947 Rover 12 .He first contacted me because his car engine sounded awful I removed the head and a couple of valves were sticking in their guides.One was slightly bent after coming into contact with the piston .I rebuilt the head and it was great When he fitted it back on as soon as he started the engine it sounded rough ,and he reckons a valve is bent again This points to the timing chain jumping .How to I tell when the two toothed timing wheels are in their correct position in relation to each other There are usually marks to line the wheels up Len

Thinking about my friends problem.If I check the number 8 tappet is at its highest point of lift,then the flywheel should show the TDC line no 1 piston TDC Len

I don’t think I’ve ever known a double timing chain jump a tooth. It’s not like a timing belt, after all! However, if it did, then surely more than one valve would be affected? Suggest you start off by checking the compression etc and ignition timing. Does the car have fresh petrol as this will make a big difference.
