Hi,
I have just got back onto this car after being led astray by another vehicle, the fuel pump on my 1935 12 has packed up, what do you suggest as an electronic replacement?

Other pumps are available but the SU type is best and looks right under the bonnet. They are quite expensive at around £120. You need a low pressure pump of about 5psi, like a Morris Minor or MG Midget. The polarity isn’t changeable so worth considering if you want to convert to negative earth before ordering one. An in line fuel filter is a good idea while you are at it and your supplier will have these. Burlen or Southern Carburettors are the best places and can be relied upon to give sound advice over the phone. You will need to wire it in to operate when the ignition is switched on and an in line fuse can be used to provide necessary protection.

The SU is a great pump and is available as an electronic version either as a complete new pump or as a kit to convert an existing pump. The pumps and kits are available in both positive and negative earth versions. If you decide to overhaul an old pump, it is a good idea to replace the diaphragm as well to ensure compatibility with the ethanol in E10 fuel, the same applies to any fuel hoses too.

Also consider the position of the pump, I have fitted a higher pressure SU electronic pump (AZX 1300 series) on the rear damper mounting of my 14 to eliminate the problem of fuel vaporisation and it has been very successful indeed, no more hot restarting problems now. The new formulations of petrol may make the problem of vaporisation worse. I also agree that a good filter is important too, I have installed an AC type with a paper element on a bracket adjacent to the RH inner wing and replaced the fuel hoses with PTFE lined stainless steel braided versions.
