1947 12hp

Post by digcot65 » Fri Nov 26, 2021 3:18 pm

Im still helping a friend with his engine.A couple of push rods became slightly bent ,which I think is sticking valves The car is immaculate but he has only covered 359 miles in 11 years !!! proof it doesn`t do a car any good to stand .We`ve removed all the head studs and the ones at the front and rear corners .However the head is solid and Ive tried everything to loosen it Im going to get a length af steel bar and place it between the read water outlet studs and the crankcase and try to lever it that way .At the moment I have put a long steel bear under a lip on the head and a jack under neath,so it has part of the front weight trying to lift the head. Iam now out of ideas I dont want to run the head as there is no compression o at least one cyl.

There are 5 studs: 2 long and3 short. there are 12 bolts. How many have you removed?

Hi Luli
With regard to the diagram showing the bolt tightening sequence for the cylinder head, do you by any chance have a similar one for the 6 cylinder engine (which has 16 bolts rather than 12)? Or a link? Its not in the workshop manual nor in any of the service sheets that I have.
I would like to redraw the diagram in colour to make following the sequence easier in the workshop
regards
Rob

It is taken from an (excellent!) guide in "Motor trader". I don't have the 6 cylinder one. But look carefully and get the zig-zag idea.

Len,

I’d advise against levering on the water outlet studs at the rear of the head. These studs can be weakened by water seepage and breaking one will give you a lot of trouble as they are tapped into the iron head, which is relatively soft compared to the stud so hard to drill out and re-tap. Best left alone! Using the manifold stud holes might be a better bet if you put in some bolts of same thread but, again, take care not to damage the head. Also lifting from the side may present an easier option that getting at the front or back.

As I recall, head has bolts that can only be removed by taking off the rocker shaft. I assume you have done this? Assuming all bolts and nuts have been removed, the head should come free. It may be that the head has been sealed using red Hermatite, or similar. You could try heating the head with a blow lamp, while trying to pry apart.

Tony.

Morning and a cold one it is .A friend who helps run a transport museum also suggested I heat the head and he said he had a long bar with a 14mm thread on it,which he used to screw into one of the centre plug holes to try to ease a head off Anyone tried this I have my own classic which Im restoring but SU Cabs are out of stock of the parts I need,so using my time on this Roverp2 lEN

Morning again Ive just been across to my friends to look at the head again All the head bolts/nuts are removed but there is not one in position 13,or a space for it They must vary according to year ,this is a 1947 12hp The head seems to be really stuck on ,Ive tried putting a bar under a lip on the head and easing it with a jack under the bar but nothing I have`t a copper hammer which it needs to tap round the head .,so that next time .Has anyone tried the 14mm threaded bar down the plug hole as a lever I said I wold give my friend a hand to remove the head but I am getting really involved

I thought I had posted a reply but unable to see it I went over to my friends and checked the head again this morning All the studs are out ,but there isnt one or a place for number 13 Someone who helps run a transport museum said when they have a stuck head, they have a long steel rod tapped to 14mm on the end ,which they screw into a plug hole to then try and encourage the head to move

I clearly see a short stud (#8) in place. Also 16 and 17. Remove all studs! long and short. then you can blow horizontally the head and it will come off. Use a block of wood as a buffer, or use a heavy plastic hammer.
