Rover 12 clutch and flywheel

Post by JohnG » Mon Mar 22, 2021 8:10 pm

I have removed the clutch and flywheel from my car and would welcome views about the state of them. The clutch lining doesn’t seem to be that worn (rivets are still quite deeply recessed). On the flywheel, there seems to be some metal worn away (perhaps about 1mm) where it would have come into contract with the clutch plate. I'm wondering if these parts need attention (e.g. skimming of flywheel) or replacing etc. Any advice would be much appreciated.

And here are some more photos (wouldn't attach at first attempt).

The flywheel doesn't look scored in the photo so a simple clean up may well suffice, but I would at least replace the centre assembly as you have the clutch apart! If the pressure plate is readily available change that too...it & it's springs do much of the work!

There are other important parts of clutch that deserve attention, like the togels and their pins, and the pressure bearing. Since servicing the clutch requires so much work to get it out do whatever you can now. Take everything apart, clean thoroughly and measure. If the pressure plate and clutch disk are within the allowed limits - reface both. See also here: https://wp.me/pXLKy-24b, https://wp.me/pXLKy-3kK, https://wp.me/pXLKy-23R

Thanks Luli, David for your advice. Am I better off handing the clutch over to a specialist at this stage? I'm keen to do as much as possible myself but, as I understand it, I may need a press, which I don't have, to remove the clutch cover and if the plate and disc are going to need refacing I'll have to go to a specialist in the end anyway.

Press is not required, all required parts are available. If you are going to use a specialist make sure that he is familiar with P2 clutch, that is different from more modern clutches.

John,

Meteor Spares provided me with an exchange reconditioned cover and plate. Give Mike a call to see what he can do to help you. Worth changing the release bearing and check the oil ways on the gearbox input shaft which lubricate it. I think that is covered off in the RSR workshop manual. Your flywheel doesn’t look too bad in the pictures so I would think you can probably avoid having it refaced. It has, after all, taken 75 years and, no doubt, some hard use to get the way it is so it’s unlikely that the careful driving you will do will degrade it a lot more. Depends how much you want to spend. I think they are balanced on the crankshaft, hence the markings, so whoever does your bearings will probably be a good place to start if you do decide to get it refaced.

Tony.
