I have bitten the bullet and ordered some radials!
I found Japanese made Falken FK090, T155/80 D17 100M. So a good high profile. Speed rating 81mph...I should be so lucky!
I kept finding mickey mouse "spare" 50mph get you home tyres on 17" rims, but these Falkens are not designated spares only but say they are proper car tyres! Apparently they fit a Mitsubishi Outlander of some sort (as a spare, not emergency). At £360 for five....delivered! They come with an option to return if not suitable. Fingers crossed. Lets see what they look like! If all else fails I can go back to cross plies.
I have the old 5.25/5.50's all off now. Two were junked, but three look decent, virtually unworn, no cracking nor damage. They will appear on "For Sale" soon!
Now the wheels go for blasting, priming and re-painting. What do people think about powder coating? The car is a very dark blue which may be a problem to match, so they may end up black. Any advice on paint for wheels if I don't powder coat?

I would be interested to see what your new raduals look like on the car. I have to replace 4 xply tyres currently Excelsior but with no age marking so they could be from the last century! I am considering radials but reluctant to change the original appearance of the car (39 DHC).
I was slighthly confused about these FK090 Falkens as some of the 17 versions are rated as temporary spares and a couple of US sites say they are not yet rated. On one site the data talks about the tire folding flat when under inflated because it is a bias tire! There is also a version which has a T in front of the size but appears to be an identical spec.
Will you be using tubes with the Falkens?
regards
Rob

Rob
You and me both!
These Falkens are FK090,T155/80 D17 from "Tyre Guru" (same outfit as MyTyre, but they were about £5 cheaper per tyre!) 80 aspect is quite tall, so they shouldlook OK. When they arrive I will put them alongside the Firestones that came off and try to post a picture I will probably fit tubes...I'll check my old ones & see if they have any size markings.

Hi,

Fitting these radials is an interesting idea. They don’t have a lot of tread but, for low usage cars, that hardly matters. The rims on old cars probably can’t support going tubeless (my wire wheels certainly won’t). How will you get on putting tubes into the tubeless tyres? Also, some of the space saver spare tyres have ‘space saver’ ‘spare’ etc in large writing on the outside, which isn’t ideal. I’ve seen some Uniroyal ones that appear ok in on-line pics but I don’t know what they are like close up.

Luli,

Great pictures of your car! I’ve been hunting for radial tyres to fit my Tourer. Some like yours would be fine but I cannot find any for my 18” rims. Currently I have 550x18 Blockleys, which are hardly worn but they are just a bit too wide and can rub the inner arches on the rear if cornering and hit a bump, which happens often on our dreadful roads! However, unless I can find some radials, I’m reluctant to change them as the only option is a regular crossply. Blockleys don’t make a 475/500 and the 450 they do is too small for the width of my wire rims. These are crossply but made to a very high standard and speed rating. Hence why I was looking at the space saver tyres to replace them, which do come in suitable sizes but only as tubeless.

So, if anyone has used these space savers successfully with tubes, I’d like to know. Thanks.

Tony.

Tony,
Watch this space (it may take a little while as the wheels are out for basting/painting/powder coating.
I see no reason why tubes cannot be fitted. I did a 10,000 mile Rally from London to Sydney on various Radials all fitted with tubes! As I recall the tubes have a size rating such as 175-155, 165-145 or whatever & you pick the one at the lower end of the width.

What a saga!
The radials were ordered 25/11/2021) through Tyre Guru/My Tyres/ Delticom _ They have a multitude of on line "shops"! The original delivery ended up in a warehouse near Hannover on 2/12/2021, where they then seemed to disappear into the Raiders of the Lost Ark warehouse! The web site is excellent when things go well, but if a problem (like this one) happens it is a bit of "Computer say no"!
Eventually (16 Dec) I made contact with a helpful lady in Germany and things began to stir. The could not locate the 5 tyres, so cancelled my order, kept the money and reissued a new order at 0 cost on the invoice (22 December) this was sent to the magic warehouse on 24 December and arrived there on 29 December. !0 January 2022....Great excitement,,, a Delivery is due,
Good News... IT ARRIVED INTACT AND AS ORDERED
Bad News...The tyres are not suitable!
The tread pattern was just about ok, rim diameter perfect rim width perfect. BUT the overall diameter was about 2-3" smaller than the cross plies. So an 80 aspect ratio is not enough.
I hope a happy ending financially...the tyres were picked up on Monday and I am promised a full refund.
I would use Tyre Guru again, their service , once I cracked their system could not be faulted
I will add a photo jater!
