Rover 10/25 Gearbox Bush / Bearing Modification

Post by Stuart7 » Sat Feb 27, 2021 3:34 pm

I have previously posted about a fault I had with the gearbox on my 1929 10/25. The issue was around the bush between the input shaft and the output shaft (the output shaft runs inside the input shaft) (pic1), (pic2). As you can see there was nothing left of the bush (pic3)! This would seem to be a reoccurring issue as in our box or spares we had 2 other shafts with the same bush failure which then wears away at the shaft and would end up with a catastrophic failure if the end of the shaft broke off. I devised a modification and have used the car all summer. I had cause to remove the gearbox to rectify a selector fault so was able to inspect the modification and can report that all looks very good so I thought I would share my mod is case anybody had a similar problem or wanted to pre-empt the failure especially if the gearbox is being rebuilt at any time. My idea was to replace the bush with roller bearing. Here is the gearbox cluster with the input shaft in position (pic4). Here are the 2 shafts concerned (pic5) (pic6). I did a bit of searching and found a roller bearing that would do the job NKI15/16-XL (pic7) (pic8). I needed to get the input and output shafts machined to accept the new bearing and as the shafts are hard I went to specialist who did a great job (Holman Engineering Co Ltd, Unit 6 - Kings Road Works - Kings Road - New Haw - Addlestone - Surrey - KT15 3BG. Tel: 01932 353555 precision@holman-engineering.co.uk
Here is a drawing I produced for Holman engineering to work from (pic9).
Had a nice test drive to make sure the selectors worked ok today, 😊

Congratulations, its supposed to be the joy of owning a classic, but can fray your nerves sometimes I`m still trying to cure wiring problems.Sometime in the past, someone did away with the solenoid in the headlamp, where one filament goes off or on , depending where the dip switch is .They then fitted a double filament bulb in both headlights, but both are on ,whichever position the dip switch is .So I`m replacing the wire from the dip switch to both headlights so It should work correctly .Now I`ve had the headlamp shells and reflectors back from being replated and can`t wait to see what the headlights are like.I remember when I first bought the car I tried them and they weren`t very good, due to badly tarnished reflectors Len
