Over heating P2
Re: Over heating P2
Is there any specific order for the removal of the nuts/bolts when taking the head off? Note to self: get a workshop manual.
Cheers

The only thing you should be careful about are the rockers and rocker shaft – use a wire to hold them together so that they do not fall apart. Otherwise putting them back together correctly may be time consuming.
The tricky part is re-assembly. Make sure you have all the necessary gaskets. Examine carefully the head bolts - they may be corroded and/or stretched - if they are you have to replace them with good high tensile, 3/8 BSF bolts of the same length. Make sure that the threads in the block are clean and dry. Do not over tighten – 30 lib-feet is enough.

Just a reminder, don't forget to re-tighten the head bolts and the three nearside nuts after about 500 miles of driving, especially if using a new head gasket, if not you risk damage to the new gasket. retighten from the centre out wards.

Thanks for the advice chaps. Luli, those pictures are very helpful, thanks. I must admit I'm a bit nervous. I'm not brilliant with spanners and I've never tackled anything like this before. Wish me luck.

You say, Rich, that you're "not brilliant with spanners". In your shoes, I'd be inclined to consult a reliable garage, one experienced with classics, regarding this head job. The last things you need right now are sheared studs and stripped threads.

Sound advice DH. Trouble is I have limited funds so I have to gamble and give it a-go. While I appreciate I'm asking for trouble I do like a challenge!

According to a sales brochure - 2.5 gallons.

Re: Over heating P2
The RSR Rover P2 Workshop Manual confirms Mike's coolant capacity figure of 2.5 gallons (20 Imperial pints) for the '38 14.

Re: Over heating P2
Further to the last posting, it now seems (see the P2 Chassis and Engine Numbers thread) that Rich's car is actually a '39 model. The coolant capacity remains the same as for '38: 20 pints.
