Air Filter: what paint finish would be correct

While waiting for other things to be ready to bolt back, I thought I would re-paint the air filter.

What paint finished did it originally have, or would look good/right now?
Mat black, crackle finish?

Gloss Black would be appropriate.

Before I paint it, i thought I would clean it.

Is it take-apart-able?
It look like it's not.

How best to clean it?
Any guidance much appreciate.

Does it have an oil bath? ... that needs refilling.

The unit does not come apart, it's not an oil bath type. You need to clean the entire canister using a non volatile parts cleaner solution then allow it to dry completely before applying a heavy oil to the mesh. I've used Gunk engine cleaner and KN filter oil with good results

As a temporary fix, I filled the holes with chemical metal (more successfully than I had guessed and repainted it all.

I read that in use it gets oil vapour from the engine. But how should I first fill/inject it with some oil?
Would 'Duck Oil' from an aerosol can (with the thin pipe/nozzel) be any good?

Usually engine oil (30 or 20/50) . The idea is the same as a K & N filter, the tackiness of the oil traps particles in the filter material until it is cleaned out.
