Hi Len,
I have just been dealing with
Cox & Turner in Somerset
https://www.coxandturner.co.uk/home
Telephone/ Fax: 01935 826816
Email: ian@coxandturner.co.uk
Ian Cox: Huish Farm, Yeovil Road, Tintinhull, Yeovil, Somerset, BA22 8QL
Ian was very helpful and did say if I could not get a head gasket for my 10/25 he could make one.
Good luck,
Stuart.

I am looking online,at a Rover 12 Six Light for sale ,it needs a fair bit of bodywork which would sui to give me a project. Also talking to the owner ,
he said the one cylinder is filling with water which hopefully will be the head gasket .Its a chance, you have to decide whether to take.It all depends on the price you have to pay, knowing the worse possible outcome .Len

There are no liners and no real shortage of Cylinder head gaskets. Try Meteor Spares or Viking engineering developments.

Hole this helps

I lost the bidding on a Rover 14 last night,it went higher than I thought it would ,and it needed a fair amount spending on it.However I have learn`t to have a fixed price in your head, when you enter an auction and that it.There is one at Garstang in a garage ,but it is missing on one cyl .with water getting in there .Also am I correct in thinking, that the body is a wood frame with the panels on it,if so is there anything to be careful of.I noticed in the photos they sent me there are quite a few blemished on the bodywork cracking etc I realise its a gamble ,but then it depends on the final selling price Len

Len,

There is a fair bit of timber in pre war cars and the p2 Rovers, like my Saloon, had a lot in the sliding roof and the doors have wooden frames with steel panels. I suspect the earlier ‘p1’ has even more. That said, when looking to buy a car that is 80-90 years old, it’s fair to say that pretty much every bit of the body or mechanics may have suffered badly and there is no rule of thumb over what to look out for. It really depends on how the car has been cared for and whether it has been exposed to woodworm or damp. As such, you need to judge each car you look at on its own merits and, I suspect, the more you spend the better the car will be. If you find one recently used on the road, that would indicate a better bet than something laid up for many years but you may strike lucky.

Probably worth checking out cars for sale by club members who are more likely to have a genuine vehicle on offer. My experience is that you save later on by spending more up front. I bought my ‘37 12 Saloon from a club member who used it for local shows. It was in a poor state and not really roadworthy. However, the steel body was very solid and it came with a spare engine that I may need for my Tourer. It cost about £6k and the end cost will be double that once the restoration is complete. I’m doing the work myself and mindful that, typically, it won’t be worth much more than £12k however much is spent on it. A great car though and well worth all the effort. Although, since buying it a couple of years ago, there have been a couple of nice examples come up for sale from club owners who have owned them long term, making me wonder if I’d been better off buying one for a few thousand more that needed little work! But then I’d have missed out on all the fun that comes from hours in the garage with a grinder and spray gun.

Good luck with your search.

Tony.

Good morning,I have just bought a 1935 Rover 12.This was on sale on Cars and Classics by VSL car sales. There is a reasonable amount to do on the car,but that is what I was looking for .I have left a deposit and hopefully have the car early June.So I will be asking questions, from the member, with more knowledge about these than I have Len
PS ,If I want to add to this post ,how do I access it,Ive been looking down the list at the past comments I made.
