Would like to buy P2 - suggestions pls

Post by classiccarnut » Fri Oct 08, 2010 12:23 pm

Hi, I am interested in finding a P2. I've looked at a few ads and like the look of the pre-war model - around 1937-39. Does anyone have suggestions as to parts availability (I know they won't be plentiful), any known problem areas, approximate price I should be looking at paying?
Any input appreciated.
Thanks

Parst are easier to get than you think though not much regularly turns up on Ebay. They are a good pre-war car and better bulit than the post-war offerings though not quite so technically advanced. There are a number of knowlegable specialists but parts are not cheap - Rover was a high quality car then and now

Price depends on condition and owners idea of rarity and value. They are not that rare and have a staid image problem.

I can't speak for the later models, but the restoration of the earlier P1/P2 ? models ( 1934 -6 ) is quite easy and extremely enjoyable. The materials that you will be dealing with are of excellent quality, and are generally over-engineered ..but can be expensive, most parts are available, including practically all rubber parts, and parts that are not available can often be made. More difficult are bakelite parts...but I am sure that fibreglass replicas will be more plentyfull in the future as the bakelite originals self destruct. I have just completed the nut & bolt restoration of a 1935 '10 ' chassis, including the running gear, engine, gearbox & rear axle/differential and found that I was able to replace or refurbish almost everything that was needed without difficulty, so restoring an earlier car is basically no different as many parts are interchangeable with the later models. Just remember that there are probably less of the earlier ones around ( 1935 ' 10s ' Archive only 8 examples remain & a 9th I am looking for, its hiding somewhere ???? )
Hope this helps. Chris Dancey
