Oil Pump for late Rover 12

Post by chris dancey » Fri May 01, 2015 7:30 am

Hi Everyone, On behalf of a Rover owner down under who has nearly completed his engine rebuild, does anyone have a spare oil pump for sale ? His name is John Clement, he has tried the usual sources, but to no avail.
Please help if you can, Thanks,

Chris

Just thought I'd let members know that by taking my knackered P2 oil pump and the guts from a relatively unworn P3/4 pump and getting a top class engineer to cut down the gears, rebush everything, make a new idler spindle and machine the baseplate flat again I now have a very effective oil pump. Quite a lot of engineering involved but at least a pump I can be sure of delivering enough flow for my new 12hp P2 engine. Regards John Clement Moonee Ponds Victoria Australia.

I have to recommend this approach to all with parts problems. Rover didnt lightly change components radically in families of cars or engines, so it is likely that another model in a family will have parts that are close to what you need. In the 70s a gent with a 1933 14hp model (met previoulsy) asked if I could help him with a failed timing chain, and very worn cam wheel. I got a chain off the shelf readily! The crankshaft chain gear was same as a P3 IIRC. For the cam wheel, we found that a P3 unit was almost identical, just a bit thicker in the boss. After getting 1/4" machined off the rear face of the P3 wheel, it all went together.

While the observation that Rover had been conservative in modifying their products is right - the conclusion is not always that they remained unchanged. P3 onward had in-line oil filter - absent in P2, P3 oil pump turns clockwise while P2 anti clockwise - which means different driving teeth wheel (both are available from Mike Couldry). It would be interesting to see a photo of your modified P3 pump.
