Sorry the reply has taken some time, unfortunately that car number is not in the RSR Records. The Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon may be able to help.

I can only add this

The numbers mean:-

6 = 1946
1 = 10hp
1 = Saloon
0496 is the build serial number

Does this number have a letter "L" or "R" before the number which would indicate an export model

Thkx all for the information. It has no "L" or "R" in front of the number, so it is an original UK model. (RHD)

Unfortunately the lack of an "L" or a "R" in front of the chassis number is no indication that the car is a UK model. I had a 1949 Rover P3, which has been traced at Gaydon as having been exported as one of 50 cars sent out to New Zealand CKD and the chassis plate showed no sign of an "R". I have since discovered another 3 cars on that original list of 50, one had a "R" and the other two, like mine, had no letter. I guess, when they were made, the guy that punched in the numbers remembered sometimes, or there were perhaps more than 1 person punching the numbers on the plate, and some did and others didn't. It all adds characteur to the cars we love!
