Neat fuel to get her to start

Hi
After replacing my 10 engine after painting the bulk head , inner wings and bonnets, I got ready to get her started again - check fuel delivery , check ignition timing bring oil pressure up without distributer cap on, all system s go, now start her up, and keep trying to start her up, turning over but no take off !
Check we have spark to all four plugs - Ok check I haven't mixed up the HT leads, adjust points to perfect, try again, and again, and again; got to be fuel - check the float bowl - full, check it is getting to the carb - OK ???
Remove plugs and see if they are wet; dry as a bone ?
Hmmm - Old trick to aid starting a dormant engine- remove plugs pour a little neat fuel in each cylinder and try her again, she fire up and runs !
the old school tricks are still valuable in todays world with older cars !
There cannot be much vacuum effect on these downdraft SU carbs to pull the fuel through the inlet manifold,!
