Just a quick note for those having trouble with their locking and immobiliser systems in these cars. It is worth remembering that two different systems were fitted, the first up to 1997 and the second type through to the end of the run. They work slightly differently and are certainly set differently if you need to use the key-code to switch off the immobiliser. Study of the two drivers handbooks reveals the later changes. Obviously it is important to try and enter your code the relevant way to have any hope of success. The second point is to double check the door switches (for courtesy light/alarm system) They may look OK, but seem to fail very easily. I took mine out and checked them electronically and found only one was actually working. Replaced three, and the alarm system cancelled and the immobiliser switched off correctly.
It makes sense until you realise that they all failed in the "door closed" position. So you would think that the alarm system should arm itself normally - but then, it would not be a Rover if everything worked logically!
