Spare wheel fitting

Good morning. I am a new member to this forum. I have just finished a restoration on a 1948 6 light P3 75 car no: 8410623 I am pleased with the outcome the car is BRG, dark with beige interior. The car sits on 525/550 x 17" 4 ply tyres. I have fitted a later twin SU carbed head and it does go well. I do have a problem. The spare wheel is a 17" with 525/550 4 ply tyre that does not fit in the spare wheel compartment. If I force it in deflated, it will be useless as I am unable to get it out by myself and it will be flat. Did the 75 have a smaller spare wheel? The car came with a spare when I bought her some 20 years ago , but I never checked the size back then, although it may well have been a beaded wheel, unsure of the whereabouts of this spare now. Anyone got any thoughts on this. Gavin Hill Nelson Rover Car Club NZ

Considering that you use the spare wheel only in emergency you can fit a smaller tire like 17X450 or 17X500/525. see here https://www.vintagetyres.com/shop/tyres ... 450-17-77l
