Hi,
I think that the big-ends, and possibly the main bearings in my P3 75 engine are too worn so I am removing the sump - so that I can measure & replace if necessary.
I am following the instructions in the P3 workshop manual that I got via this forum (very useful manual by the way ) so I have removed the LH steering rod as instructed and have removed all the bolts holding the sump in place - so the sump is now loose and rattling around, but I can't get it out!!! When I try to remove it the front part of the sump jams on the top of the centre of the steering bracket
Should the sump come out straight backwards down the centreline of the car & therefore clear the underside of the gearbox housing? Or should it be slid out to the the left or right somehow? I feel sure there must be a trick to this somewhere, so I'd love to hear what the trick is!
At the moment I'm considering undoing the engine bolts and borrowing an engine crane to lift the engine up and therfore give me space to slide the sump out - but this approach seems a bit drastic (or is it normal practice perhaps?).

Hi Neil, I think your final sentence is the way forward. I've only done this once, someone else might have other ideas but I'm sure that is what I had to do. You cannot raise the engine too far before contact with the bulkhead though. Best of luck.

Thanks for the feedback - though I finally figured out how to get the sump out without raising the engine. It's a matter of moving the rear (nearest gearbox) of the sump towards the driver side of the car, then lever the front part of the sump across to the same side - it is tight but so tight to cause any damage - the sump then drop straight down.
No doubt getting it back in will be a challenge buit I should have a couple of weeks before then............

Meanwhile I have removed the big-ends - they are worn - so now the search is on for new ones..............

I just removed the sump from my P3 all I removed the Drop links with a good hammer and a pannel beating dolly and that allowed the sump to come down and back. Some of my nuts where siezed and the stud came out instead ( this seemed pretty common around the club when I mentioned it).
I am about to remove it again because I overtightened the nuts when putting it back and broke the cork Gasket I didn't realise how fragile they are and treated it like a rubber one.

Do you know Pierre Janusz as a supplier of Rover parts? I've been in contact with him & he claims to have what I need (which is great news, so thanks for your idea!!), but I have never dealt with him before.
I would appreciate some comments/feedback if you know him as a supplier before I commit to ordering from him:-)
