Rover 16 Gearbox Repairs

Post by Rovergeoff » Thu Sep 29, 2022 12:15 am

Good Evening All,
I am looking for a recommendation for someone who can do some work on my 1947 Rover P2 gearbox and I can’t find anyone local to Liverpool prepared or able to do it.
The box is out of the car ready to fit a new clutch and I find that the old clutch was seriously contaminated with oil leaking from the seal at the end of the shaft inside the bell housing. There is also quite a bit of play in that bearing which will require replacing. While the box is out, it would be a good time to service the freewheel, which has never worked properly.
I don’t mind travelling to take the box to someone capable.
If you are unable to help, could you suggest someone whom I might contact for assistance. Private messages most welcome.
Many thanks in anticipation,
Geoff.

If you like to do the work yourself, you can see here how to do that:

Thanks Luli for the explanation but it is a bit beyond me. Not sure how to use google translate either. At least I now know that the information is out there. I'm hoping someone has had work done on their box and can recommend a garage.
Thanks again,
Best Wishes,
Geoff.

I had thought about that but decided that a repair job may be the better option as at least I know it is going to be OK once done. A second hand box could be a bit of an expensive unknown quantity. If I am unsuccessful in my attempt to find a suitable gearbox repairer, I will go down this route.
Thanks for your reply,
Geoff.

Hello Geoff,
If you use Google Chrome as your browser, you can get it to automatically translate from Hebrew into English. Early Landrover series1 gearboxes had a freewheel unit attached but facing forward and disconnecting drive to the front axle, not the rear as on your car. The gearsets are very similar and a series 1 specialist should be able to sort it out. Freewheel poor/non operation may be due to cable adjustment or the internals needing a clean and flush. I'm surprised that the oil seems to be coming from the gearbox. Are you sure its not from the rear main engine bearing?

Do let us know what you want to do re the stores.

About 10 years ago I saw a nicely restored P2 gearbox at the Formhalls boot

You can see here how to adjust the free wheel and how it works

Birch motors in Liverpool specialise in Range rover gearbox rebuilds, they might know someone local who will tackle a manual box.

Thanks for the info', I will be getting on with doing something about it next week. The oil is definitely coming from the gearbox end, there is play in the shaft. I have had an offer of help from a friend who is willing to tackle the box, I just now need to source the bearing and oil seal. I will keep you informed of my progress, and probably be asking for more help and advice !
Best Wishes,
Geoff.

The freewheel tail bearing (22) is 6219A (90X50X20 mm).
Free Wheel housing oil seal c122 1-3/8 X 2.816 X 9/16
Check the shaft (31) . If worn where the seal is running it needs hard chrome coating and re grinding to original dimensions.
