Flashing indicator conversion and LED bulbs

Further to Rob Holmwood’s recent post in the new member section, I thought it would be useful to mention in a separate thread ‘Classic Dynamo & Regulator Conversions’ as a source for parts and information for anyone who is upgrading their lights or installing flashing indicators. Looking at their web site they make available for free some simple diagrams for connecting up flashers as well as supplying the parts required. I haven’t used them yet but they look good and I will be ordering some of their bulbs to use in my cars.

Getting the wiring in an old car up to a safe and reliable state can be a headache for anyone unfamiliar with electrics and, while I would urge anyone with an old car to prioritise a re-wire above paintwork or upholstery, the use of LEDs, as suggested by Rob, will certainly help reduce the power load on the system and lessen the possibility of overheated old wiring and subsequent fires.

Another recent post by ‘partviking’ of a 13A mains fuse in his regulator unit demonstrated the importance of a sound wiring system and the danger of quick fixes. A 13A mains fuse is capable of handling 4000 Watts of power but a 25A, 12volt, auto fuse will handle just 300 Watts. Lucky he spotted what had been done before it caused a problem.

Tony.
