Its been working fine with the clear plastic filter up until now. I've checked all the unions. I've used PTFE tape throughout. I'm beginning to think it might be the electric pump. Anyone got a suggestion as to which pump would be best if I was to replace it?

I have good experience with two pumps: SU AUA25EP, which is installed in the engine bay, and Facet cube, which is installed on the back of the car, near and below the fuel tank. Note, however that I had moved the fuel line and the pumps to the left side of the cars, as far as possible from the exhaust. This is because today's fuel boiling temperature is much lower than the boiling temperature of fuel earlier times. See more http://wp.me/pXLKy-1wa

Not sure what my pump is as I painted it black! It is on the bulkhead under the bonnet on the right-hand side near where the throttle pedal mechanism comes through. There is some kind of flow regulator between it and the carb that was fitted by a previous owner.

The "flow regulator" is probably a pressure regulator. If so, it means that the pump is a high pressure pump that should be mounted on the back of the car, near and below the fuel tank. These pumps are weak on sucking.

OK found out that pump is a Webcon AU2635 low pressure 2.5-4.5 psi. Picture below. I guess the bit on the bottom is a filter. Image
Also below is a picture of the 'flow regulator'. I've seen these on other old cars. All this was fitted by a previous owner. Image
The car ran fine all last year (3000 miles). It will tickover now but when the engine is under load it cuts out. It just doesn't seem to be getting enough fuel.

From their web site: ". This pump is [...] a pusher pump designed to be mounted horizontally near to the base of the fuel tank."

Blimey! Thanks for the info Luli. Thing is it worked OK all last year. I did 3000 miles and until recently it was OK. Don't really fancy moving it to the back so I suppose I best replace it with a suitable sucker.

What you have is exactly the pump and pressure valve I found under the bonnet when I got my P2. Maybe there was some advice floating around years ago that this was a god set up? I have since replaced it with an SU pump which doesnt need the pressure reducer but unfortunately still having problems with cutting out when warm. I now have the SU pump set up in series with the mechanical pump and only use the electric pump to prime the system when cold as it makes no difference when it is on or off,

regards Rob

As I said mine was working fine like this last year so I am loathe to change the pump until I have ruled out everything else.

And thankfully I seem to have fixed it!! :) I replaced all the spring clips with jubilee clips and used PTFE tape on all the unions and hey-presto it's running perfectly. No bubbles in the fuel filter!! I let it tick over for ages which it wouldn't do before and then took it for a run of 10 miles or so. It behaved brilliantly so on Sunday I took it for a longer run of 45 miles and thankfully no problems. Used it for work today and it was fine.

Thanks for everyones advice, specially Luli. I will change the pump at some point. But rear springs are now my priority.
Cheers
