1929 10/25 Jumping out of 3rd gear

Post by Stuart7 » Tue Feb 16, 2021 9:05 pm

Hi All,
I have had an issue with my 1929 10/25. It will occasionally jump out of 3rd gear. Decided to investigate today as the garage had warmed up a bit. I removed the gear lever and turret. I removed the bolt with a tab washer from the threaded holes that are ringed in the pictures expecting to find some sort of spring and ball bearing that would locate into the recess that is in the selector shaft. But I found nothing? I removed the reverse gear one to check that and it was the same. You can see a recesses in the shaft that line up in the gear position and the neutral position.
So can anyone shed some light on whats going on and what I have missed. Should there be something under the bolt, if so what? If not what is the purpose of these bolts?
Looking forward to any comments.
Thank,
Stuart.

Hello on many cars ,there is a small ball bearing and a spring the bearing drops into the shaft recess and holds it into place by the spring pressure Len

If it is missing the question is ....Where is it! Possibly in the bottom of the gearbox....not good if it decides to have a look round the inside of the box!
Drain the oil & see if anything untoward comes out. A small magnet glued into the drain plug may help...as used in early Minis. Most instructive sometimes!

Possibly both springs broke over the years and that would allow the bearing to jump out,and fall into the bottom of the box along with bits of spring. If that is what happened ,Did the gear stay in at one time,or have you only recently had the car

So I solved the mystery of the missing spring. If you look at my very rough sketch you will see that the spring was underneath the shaft pushing the ball bearing up. So it was impossible to remove without dismantling the gearbox. Removed the box and dismantled and found the ball and spring intact but the edge of the indent was rounded off where the ball had been acting on the same bit for many years. Fitted a new spring and found a better condition shaft so all rebuilt and ready to go back in, :)

Now I must admit I know very little about any gearbox and nothing at all about the 10/25 one but doesn't your diagram imply that there should be a spring and ball underneath the selector shaft? Otherwise why would the spring size recess be there? Perhaps there should be 2 springs and balls, one on top and one underneath? I looked at the P2 diagram out of interest and sure enough there are 2 springs and balls on either side of the reverse selector which is horizontal. There is only one spring and ball - from the top - on the forward selector. Can any one cast any light as to why there is a difference?

The diagram shows how it was and is. The spring and ball under the shaft is how it should be. This design made it impossible to check the spring and ball unless the selector was removed from the gearbox which meant a complete strip down. The odd thing is why the hole above the shaft is threaded with a bolt and tab washer. I appreciate that a hole is needed to insert the spring but still can't see the purpose of the bolt, it could have been a plain hole.
