Rover 12 steering

Post by digcot65 » Tue Aug 11, 2020 12:49 pm

Hello I took the steering box of my 1934 rover 12,to a specialist in Birmingham, saying there was no rush .This was 8 weeks ago and the elderly man who rebuilds these is only part time and is now ill .I need to move the car soon to start spraying so it looks as though I will have to collect it if they cant give a time .If it comes to me finding a restorer for the box, steering, who can recommend a company .Len

I have good experience with Steering Services, Simon. P. Everett tel 01932481882 sales@steeingservices.co.uk . Working with him from far away was smooth and effective.

Hell what is this button for.I can`t move it at the moment ,is it for fuel tank reserve.Dont look at the paintwork,I`m in the middle of doing the bodywork You can see also the state of the paintwork.I think it has been coat after coat with no real preparation .Len

Yes, that's the petrol reserve. There are a lot of steering joints in the system, with a great deal of scope for lost motion that shows up as play. As Luli says, Steering Services may be able to help rebuild the box.

Mike

Morning, when I phoned the steering box company in Birmingham I said I would collect the box last Friday, at least I could move the car and remove it for repair when I was again ready .They phone me on Thursday ,to say the box is in bits as the elderly man had started work on it,so I don`t know where I go from here.I thought since they advertise rebuilding of old car steering assemblies ,there would be a few there who could do it Im getting near to the point where I start spraying,I am building a "tent" in the garage to help keep the dust down.Ive sprayed many a car in there without a "tent" arrangement, but dust is a huge problem. It usually meany hours cutting and polishing the paint down

With regards to the steering,I have been offered the use of a spray booth,by a friend with a body repair company. But I am stuck as I am unable to move the car.I have to phone today to see if the steering repair company have got an answer.I am hoping ,if the elderly man who does those boxes hasn`t returned to work,if there is someone there who can reassemble it.At least I can fit is back and move the car and even drive it onto a breakdown vehicle, then I can take it to my friends spray company.Life isn`t straight forward in a normal restoration, but when things like this happen it really throws a spanner in the works. We will see what happend today.Len

I have been back to the steering box repair company and collected it as it was They said that they are waiting for a part for the box,but I need to move the car while I am pre pair it for spraying I don`t know whether to hang on or take it to someone else.If they come back to me in a week or so,and say they have the part I would feel awkward,if I had sent it elsewhere. At least time is on my side,as I have weeks of work to do on the car .I`ve managed to remove the dents and damage to the bodywork ,as well as I can.The car is 86 yrs old so its never going to be concours .I now have to go all over it with 800 wet and dry to make sure the body is ready for the U/C Len
