Vulcanised rubber gearbox / freewheel cover .. rivets along the bottom of each side

Just wondering what the low level run of 4 rivets each side of the tunnel are for ? ... They hold small square pieces of green leather in place inside the tunnel. Was something more substantial originally inside the tunnel ? What was its purpose ?? Thanks to anyone who can enlighten me! https://www....

Re: Freewheel lubrication (filling and draining) - 1936 Rover 12

Thanks Luli, That will work to fill and empty the freewheel with the gearbox / freewheel assembly out of the car, but in normal daily / monthly / annual/ 10-yearly use, does the freewheel oil never need changing ?? Did Rover intend this ?? Why is there not a large transfer hole between the gearbox a...

Freewheel lubrication (filling and draining) - 1936 Rover 12

I have a spare gearbox and freewheel, so decided to unbolt the freewheel from the gearbox, open the freewheel mechanism up (all looks good, no discernible wear), and reassemble it all. An interesting exercise, a chance to check, clean, and re-oil bearings, and interesting to physically see exactly h...

Re: Luvax Vane Type Dampers

Mike, Aaahhh ... I have a pristine but 8 year old (I guess) workshop manual, and I was hoping to avoid spending on the new one ... however, it’s clearly time to bite the bullet and upgrade to the current version. Your comments on oil SAE and viscocity are helpful, as I have definitely fallen into th...

Luvax Vane Type Dampers

My 1936 Rover 12 has Luvax Vane type dampers front and rear. The front ones were empty, the rear were full of VERY thick treacly oil (thicker than Tate & Lyle Golden Syrup !). Rubber (or whatever) bushes on the dampers themselves were dry and giving huge amount of friction. Having emptied the rear o...

Re: Front Brakes (Girling Mechanical) - 1936 Rover 12 (6 lig

Tony, As you say, the alignment between pivot arm and entry into expander was not correct, so I ‘corrected’ with rod bends (drivers side only). The main front pivot looks to have been welded at some point in its past, but no packing added .. bit odd, but looks and feels right now. Well spotted on th...

Re: Front Brakes (Girling Mechanical) - 1936 Rover 12 (6 lig

Thanks for the interesting post ... yes, the history of my car is going to be fun to dig into. Last owner in Truro for 10 years, and then a bit hazy before that. Apparently the RSR does know of it, so will make some enquiries (I wonder who I should contact ? ). I would love to have a tourer one of t...

Hi Luli,

I now have your pages translated (downloaded Google Chrome on the iPad instead of using safari, and now I get the “page translation” pop up ... now I can read the words that go with the photos !

Re: Front Brakes (Girling Mechanical) - 1936 Rover 12 (6 lig

Luli, I am an avid reader of your fascinating (and wonderfully photographed) posts / website, but hadn’t seen that thread of pics ... I really must get page translation understood and applied .. Many thanks for the link, and another confirmation that whoever last did the front wheels / brakes manage...

Re: Front Brakes (Girling Mechanical) - 1936 Rover 12 (6 lig

Thanks Tony, Much appreciated ... and I will be sure to check straight run of rods to actuators when I do it. The rear axle has been (by previous owner) overhauled, reportedly with new seals, and no sign of any oil leaks. Will keep a close eye on it once It’s on the road. Much of the harder work on ...
