"Eating oil"? smoke from the exhaust? fumes from the breather or the rocker cover? Do you have a vacuum gauge? low vacuum on idle is indication of valves or rings issues.

I suspect that the issue is in springs 50, 49 or the corresponding balls (47, 46)

Yes, this is the right method. Removing the two long studs helps to do it easier.

You need to remove the old felt to get access to the small screws holding the channels. A new felt is available.
