Check the rubber support between the gearbox and crossmember is in good order. They go soft and collapse with age/oil contamination and cause the symptoms you describe

I found my spare was too big to fit in the wheel well of the boot lid, maybe modern tyre sizes are larger than they were back in the 40s
My solution was to let just enough air out the tyre to allow it to slip into its space and carry a 12v compressor

I wouldn’t worry too much about the exact length, you really shouldn’t be letting the fuel level go low enough to have to use the reserve as it draws the dirt from the bottom of the tank and causes blocked jets in the carburettor

I don't know of any data regarding cold settings therefore to allow for metal expansion from heat I would suggest adding 2-3 thou for cold and check as soon as everything is up to temperature
