Re: Not engaging reverse gear

Thanks Luli
I am presently occupied trying to find studs to get the exhaust manifold back on in order to get to the National Rally so I have decided to leave the gearbox as it is for now and maybe discuss it with others at the rally. Assuming I make it of course!

Re: Not engaging reverse gear

I got the freewheel re-assembled as noted above and put everything back but I had problems with the result. All gears were jammed solid at first. I played with the selector dog position (the notch in the shaft allows a fair degree of adjustment) and with the detent springs and managed to get the for...

Re: Not engaging reverse gear

Just a quick update. My idea as above did not work becasue the freewheel unit would not move far enough to get the locking dog off the main shaft. But I did eventually work out a method of unlocking the splines by pressing freewheel operating shaft H40 -which protrudes out of the box with a spring- ...

Re: Not engaging reverse gear

Hi Luli Thanks for being so patient with my queries and thanks for the beautifully clear photos. They do reassure me that I was on the right track by trying to align the splines but the problem remains that I cannot see the splines with the box in situ to do this. From the gap between the freewheel ...

Re: Not engaging reverse gear

Can anyone help please? I am struggling to mate the freewheel unit back to the gearbox ('47 14/16 box) which is in situ in the car. This is in fact the third* time I have taken it apart and reassembled it but each time the problem is the same but the previous random solutions dont seem to work. The ...

Re: Not engaging reverse gear

Thanks for that Luli. I apreciate you taking the time. I did find that the long spring was missing but as you say that may not have been causing the reverse problem. It must be there for some reason! I can only think that whoever removed the spring or didnt replace it, worked on the assumption that ...

Re: Not engaging reverse gear

Confusing day yesterday. Following my call with Mike Couldry I checked the spare gearbox which is in 2 parts currently and it confirmed that what I was saying about there being 2 springs - the long one inside the reverse shaft and the short one which on the outside of the freewheel shaft and these 2...

Re: Not engaging reverse gear

EUGH! All that struggle was in vain! Mike Couldry has just told me that what I have is an 'adaption' of the illustrated system for disengaging the freewheel ie the short spring which I have extending from the rear of the freewheel is in lieu of the long spring, not a separate spring. Mine looks like...

Re: Not engaging reverse gear

Hi Tont Thanks for your sage and calming advice. I have booked into the platinum rally and am very conscious of the elapsing time especially as I have other issues on the car to attend to beforehand. Anyway you are right the floor panels do come out although the chassis framing remains. But it could...

Re: Not engaging recerse gear

A frustrating day. Having successfully separated the freewheel housing on the spare gearbox without issue I started on the box in the car. But it turned into one of those jobs that at each stage another factor has to be dealt with. I removed the gearstick remote unit and the restraint strap for the ...
