Re: Bringing a 1939 '10 engine back to life

Is the clutch free? Tim, that is the question, indeed... Since last week, we have been pondering as to how sticky the clutch should be; the initial examination of the clutch control would suggest that the mechanism is oiled, but seems sluggish to return after pressing the pedal. What we know for su...

Re: Bringing a 1939 '10 engine back to life

Further progress; Firstly, an excellent New Year's Eve present turned-up from Mike Couldrey, which has meant that progress could be made at-all. A nice shiny new cyl. head gasket has meant that the cylinder head could be returned to its rightful place, and a set of new head-bolts should ensure that ...

Re: Bringing a 1939 '10 engine back to life

Well, the progress so far is quite good. Some things are good, some not so good.... The initial inspection of the engine entailed getting Lucy onto the 4-post ramps, at which point we were able to remove the sump-plug and drain the oil into a pan. The oil was thick and heavy, and plenty of initial s...

Re: Bringing a 1939 '10 engine back to life

I have finally got a round to sorting-out some of the photos. This is the link to the album for the collection of the little lady in 2006; http://s374.photobucket.com/user/stuart143/library/Lucy I'll try to organise some of the photos of the components as laid-out on the front lawn when I first look...

Re: Bringing a 1939 '10 engine back to life

Well, I have had my first stroke of luck on this project - the manuals and parts catalogues that I bought for Lucy when I first brought her home, safely ensconsed amongst all my other workshop manuals (i.e. "lost"), have now re-surfaced, including the original "Rover Spares 1934-1940 Ten & Twelve Mo...

Re: Over heating P2

I always use a Bluecol mix antifreeze, changing it every 3-5 years or so, at one time feeling was, perhaps still is, that pink-coloured more usually available antifreeze is a degrading problem for some of older cars alloy water castings....... I agree with you there, Tim, and even engines as recent...

Re: Bringing a 1939 '10 engine back to life

Thanks both for your replies. Be rest-assured that there will be many pictures of the "awakening" as things progress. I have used Burlen Fuel Systems in the past (I think they go under a different moniker these days?) and have been very happy with their service and parts. I know that these people ha...

Bringing a 1939 '10 engine back to life

I am just about to bring a Rover 10 1939 back to life after slumbering for 43 years. This will occur over the next 3-4 weeks (a Christmas project forced on myself by an eager friend!). The objective is to see how viable the powertrain is likely to be on this car, before the major investment of time ...
