Re: SU Downdraft carburettor in place of Solex
David, The big spring behind the jet adjustment nut is there to maintain pressure on the nut once the desired mixture has been determined. The black spring on the side of Luli’s carb is the choke return spring. The choke operating via the mixture knob on the dash and simply pulling the jet out a bit...

Re: SU Downdraft carburettor in place of Solex
David, The earlier cars had a different head with two inlet ports rather than the four that became standard 38/39, I believe. This made the 10 as powerful as the old 12 and the 12 as quick as the 14- if I remember the details from James Taylor’s book correctly. Both my cars have the early head so I ...

Re: SU Downdraft carburettor in place of Solex
Hi David, I’d suggest fitting either one or the other, rather than muddling the parts up. In fact, you could easily get both working and try to see which operates best with your car. However, there are a couple of things you need to do. The 10 carb should be a straight fit for your 12 but you need t...

Re: P3 bonnet tape
Hi, I’m not familiar with the P3, but it is probably much the same as the P2. When I did mine I used small pop rivets to hold the tape on and they pulled in really tightly, thereby not rubbing on the underside of the bonnet edge. These were 3mm rivets and I had to carefully drill the holes to fit. F...

Re: New Member - Inherited Rover 14 Sports Saloon 1934 Restoration Project!
Hi again, Just been looking through your posted pictures again. It looks like your Grandad had the engine and axle out so you may find the mechanicals have already been looked at. If that is so it would certainly be worth seeing if you can turn the engine by hand and, if appears ok, on the starter. ...

Re: New Member - Inherited Rover 14 Sports Saloon 1934 Restoration Project!
Hi, Always wonderful to see a previously unknown and unrestored Rover, albeit requiring considerable attention. That said, your car appears to be complete and there is nothing to suggest it has major mechanical failings. The bodywork appears in good condition and the interior parts look usable with ...

Re: rocker shaft 194712hp
Sound thinking and maybe Len would too. However, it’s not his car and, given the minimal usage his friend’s car gets, it won’t make any difference. The important thing is that this car will be returned to the road. Changing the guides, seats and valves at a later date is something I’m sure the owner...

Re: Fuel Pump For 1935 12
Kevin, Other pumps are available but the SU type is best and looks right under the bonnet. They are quite expensive at around £120. You need a low pressure pump of about 5psi, like a Morris Minor or MG Midget. The polarity isn’t changeable so worth considering if you want to convert to negative eart...

Re: rocker shaft 194712hp
Len, Good work on finally getting the head off! When I cleaned up my cylinder head I had it blast cleaned to remove all the carbon and scale etc. However, it’s important that the blast media used is non abrasive to the metal such as glass beads. I believe soda is also used but the person doing it sh...

Re: 1947 12hp
Len, Hard to say, given that none of us have had a cylinder head so hard to remove. I would use a blow lamp so that the heat can be focussed on the join/gasket. However, make sure that all fuel pipes and wiring are out of the way so there is no chance of setting fire to the engine bay! Good luck. To...
