The unit does not come apart, it's not an oil bath type. You need to clean the entire canister using a non volatile parts cleaner solution then allow it to dry completely before applying a heavy oil to the mesh. I've used Gunk engine cleaner and KN filter oil with good results

Welcome to the forum. I'm unsure what exact wood is on the prewar cars but the post war cars have wooden floors which when renewed are done with ¾” marine plywood, the trim pieces will be on a fibre board similar to hardboard which can be bent into shape by soaking in water then shaped as required. ...

Shock absorbers do not affect the height of the vehicle, if you removed both front shock absorbers the height would be exactly the same as what you have at the moment. A weak spring is the most likely cause
